Southeast Asian Games debut for Kun L’Bokator

May 9, 2023

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA – History was made on May 4-8, 2023, as Kun Bokator made its official Olympic level sporting debut at the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.  Cambodia hosted the biennial games for the first time since the mid 1970’s, when the nation was ravaged by civil war and genocide (1975 to 1979).  Six countries participated in 21 Kun Bokator events with Indonesia receiving 20 medals, Cambodia 19, Philippines 16, Laos 11, Vietnam 9 and Myanmar 9.  Cambodia led in Gold Medals with 8.

This is a landmark achievement for the fledgling traditional Cambodian martial art, which nearly two decades ago was relatively unknown and facing extinction. Six months earlier Kun Bokator achieved another milestone, being inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (ICH).  (Photo Yeun Punlue, Khmer Times)
